The Rionowcast project is a consortium composed of LNCC, CEFET-RJ, UFF, and the Rio Operations Center (COR), a crisis center dedicated to monitoring the city of Rio de Janeiro. This collaborative initiative focuses on research, development, and student education in the fields of Artificial Intelligence and Data Management, specifically applied to forecasting extreme rainfall events in Rio de Janeiro. As the number of rainfall events exceeding 50 mm per hour increases in Rio de Janeiro, it becomes crucial to develop technology capable of mitigating their impacts. In a megacity like Rio, extreme rainfall can cause a range of issues, including urban flooding, landslides, traffic congestion, and even casualties. To tackle these challenges, the Rionowcast consortium brings together researchers, students, and professionals to develop AI-based models for predicting extreme rainfall.
