Abstract:
Welcome to the seventh edition of the AI Index report. The 2024 Index is our most comprehensive yet and arrives at a crucial moment when the influence of AI on society has never been more pronounced. This year, we have expanded our scope to cover key trends more extensively, including technical advances in AI, public perceptions of the technology, and the geopolitical dynamics surrounding its development.

Featuring more original data than ever before, this edition provides new estimates on AI training costs, in-depth analyses of the responsible AI landscape, and an entirely new chapter dedicated to the impact of AI on science and medicine.

The AI Index report tracks, compiles, distills, and visualizes data related to artificial intelligence (AI). Its mission is to provide unbiased, rigorously verified data from a broad range of sources to help policymakers, researchers, executives, journalists, and the general public develop a more complete and nuanced understanding of the complex AI landscape.

The AI Index is globally recognized as one of the most trusted and authoritative sources of data and insights on artificial intelligence. Previous editions have been cited in major publications, including The New York Times, Bloomberg, and The Guardian, have accumulated hundreds of academic citations, and have been referenced by high-level policymakers in the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union, among others. This year's edition surpasses all previous ones in size, scale, and scope, reflecting the growing significance of AI in all aspects of our lives.
