Bernardo Gonçalves, LNCC Researcher, Gains Media Recognition for Study on Artificial Intelligence

The Senior Technologist at the National Laboratory for Scientific Computing (LNCC/MCTI), Bernardo Nunes Gonçalves, received media attention following the publication of an article by Agência Fapesp on March 7, titled "We Are Already Living in One of the Futures Described by Science Fiction, Says Researcher." The article discusses Gonçalves' scientific paper, "Passed the Turing Test: Living in Turing Futures," published in the journal Intelligent Computing by the Science group. The piece was redistributed by media outlets such as Interesse Nacional, Revista Galileu, Revista Veja, CNN Brasil, among others, totaling around 22 republications to date.

The paper explores the state of the art in artificial intelligence, with the researcher asserting that current machines can pass the Turing Test, demonstrating the ability to imitate human cognitive behavior. He also highlights the urgent need for more robust methods to evaluate artificial intelligence, pointing out key challenges that still need to be addressed, such as computational sustainability, equitable distribution of benefits, and the need for more reliable assessments.

Reflecting on Alan Turing’s work, Gonçalves concludes: "We are already living in one of 'Turing's futures,' in which machines can imitate human cognition to the point of being indistinguishable in certain interactions. This does not mean that artificial intelligence has reached its full potential. There are still fundamental challenges to be addressed, such as computational sustainability, equitable distribution of benefits, and the need for more robust evaluation methods. Turing's vision remains more relevant than ever, not only as a technical criterion but also as a starting point for deeper debates on AI’s impact on society and humanity."
