Brazilian research contributes to the global debate on AI and Linguistics
Sep, 25 2025

The International Seminar “AI meets Language: Applied Linguistics & Artificial Intelligence” will bring together researchers from different countries to discuss recent advances at the interface between Applied Linguistics and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Córdoba, Spain, on November 7–8, 2025, in a hybrid format.
Among the highlights of the program is the participation of Professor Tiago Torrent, from the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF), who will deliver the lecture “Copilots for Linguists Reloaded.” The presentation will address the use of AI copilots as auxiliary tools for linguists, emphasizing the potential of these technologies to transform practices of language analysis and research.
On this occasion, the researcher revisits the experiments presented in the book Copilots for Linguists: AI, Constructions and Frames (Torrent et al., 2023) and introduces new techniques for prompt design aimed at assisting linguists in building (multimodal) frame-based linguistic resources and datasets. In particular, the lecture will discuss the similarities between AI-driven chatbots and other tools for processing linguistic data, as well as the fundamental principles for using AI copilots in research: prompt design, retrieval-augmented generation, and risk mitigation. The activity will also include a practical session, in which participants will develop and evaluate their own prompts.
Professor Torrent’s presence is especially relevant due to his work at FrameNet Brasil (FN-Br) – the Computational Linguistics Laboratory, which is part of the network of AI research centers and groups mapped by the Artificial Intelligence Institute of the National Laboratory for Scientific Computing (IIA-LNCC/MCTI), coordinated by Professor Fábio Porto (LNCC). FN-Br is a reference in the production of linguistic resources and the application of AI to language, making a significant contribution to consolidating the field in Brazil and projecting national research internationally.
The seminar represents an opportunity to closely follow debates and research outcomes that connect linguistics and artificial intelligence, as well as to strengthen academic and technological cooperation networks. The full program is available on the event’s website.
