IIA-LNCC: Science, Inclusion, and Innovation in the Spotlight at Expotec - 77th SBPC

During the Expotec exhibition at the 77th Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science (SBPC), held at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) in Recife, the Artificial Intelligence Institute of LNCC/MCTI (IIA-LNCC) took part with the lecture "Artificial Intelligence Institute LNCC/MCTI: A Journey of Collaboration and Engagement", presented by Anmily Paula Martins and Gabriela Moraes, members of the Institute’s team.

The presentation offered the audience an overview of the IIA-LNCC's strategic actions, coordinated by Professor Fábio Porto, which has been acting as a national and international hub for research, innovation, and coordination around key topics for the country’s future—such as climate change, public health, cybersecurity, drug development, the future of work, and large language models (LLMs).

Among the highlighted initiatives was the mapping of over 160 artificial intelligence research groups in Brazil, fostering connections between academia, industry, and society. Another major highlight was the promotion of the National Artificial Intelligence Olympiad (ONIA), which attracted more than 716,000 students, sparking interest and bringing young people closer to science and technology.

The IIA-LNCC has also represented Brazil in international discussions through its participation in the GPAI (Global Partnership on AI), contributing reflections on ethics, social impacts, and AI governance at a global level. The presentation also addressed cooperation agreements established with international institutions, such as Inria (France) and bioinformatics and big data centers in China, in addition to integration with LNCC's supercomputing infrastructure—home to Santos Dumont, the most powerful academic supercomputer in Latin America.

This activity was part of Expotec, a space dedicated to the popularization of science, technology, and innovation, offering the public a broad view of the role of IIA-LNCC in building open, collaborative science focused on major national challenges. The speakers shared experiences from the collective construction of the Institute as an innovation hub that invests in network-building, encourages new talents, and strengthens inclusive and diverse practices.

Projects focused on the development of Portuguese-language technologies and the ethical and responsible application of artificial intelligence were also highlighted, demonstrating IIA-LNCC’s commitment to a fairer, more accessible, and socially engaged digital future. Participation in SBPC reinforces the Institute’s mission to democratize knowledge, bring science and society closer together, and drive technological advancement responsibly in Brazil.
