IIA-LNCC strengthens ties with Japan during visit to the National Institute of Informatics
Jul, 28 2025

On June 16, 2025, the coordinator of the LNCC’s
Institute of Artificial Intelligence (IIA-LNCC), Professor Fábio
Porto, took part in an official visit to the National Institute of Informatics (NII) in Tokyo, Japan.
The main objective of the meeting was to expand
institutional relations and seek new
strategic partnerships in areas such as research, talent development, and
infrastructure focused on artificial intelligence. During the mission, meetings
were held with NII leaders to exchange experiences, present ongoing projects,
and discuss concrete possibilities for international collaboration in applied
AI.
Also joining the Brazilian delegation was Paulo
Afonso, a representative from the General Coordination of Digital
Transformation (SETAD-MCTI), reinforcing
the Brazilian government's commitment to strengthening public policies and
promoting technological innovation on a global scale.
The visit agenda included discussions on
responsible artificial intelligence, data
security, shared infrastructures, building LLMs based on open science
approaches, and strengthening international collaborative
research networks. The Brazilian delegation also had the opportunity to tour
NII’s state-of-the-art laboratories and observe some of the unique technologies
developed by the institution, which is currently a global reference in computer
science and AI.
Negotiations are underway with Japanese
institutions for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), as there is already expressed interest in
scientific cooperation with Brazil, especially in AI aimed at mathematical and
scientific applications.
This initiative consolidates the role of IIA-LNCC as a facilitator of partnerships with centers of excellence and reaffirms its alignment with the guidelines of MCTI and the Brazilian scientific community, aiming at the development of AI solutions with direct impact on society.
