NUS creates institute to boost AI research for public good

The launch of the NUS AI Institute (NAII), Singapore, on March 25 represents a significant milestone in the advancement of research in artificial intelligence (AI) and its impacts on diverse areas of society. With a specific focus on addressing ethical concerns and risks associated with AI, as well as its application in crucial sectors such as education, healthcare, finance and sustainability, NAII is positioned to become a leading institution in this field.

The fact that more than 20 researchers from a variety of disciplines from the National University of Singapore (NUS) are involved in the institute demonstrates the interdisciplinary and comprehensive approach that will be taken. With experts in fields such as business, computer science, data science, engineering, medicine, law and sustainability, NAII is well equipped to address the complex, multi-dimensional challenges associated with AI.

The more than 10 planned research programs will address a wide range of issues, from ethical and legal issues to the practical application of AI in specific sectors. These programs will likely lead to significant advances not only in the theory and development of AI, but also in the practical implementation of AI-based solutions that benefit society as a whole.
