Researcher Award and Knowledge Exchange Mark IIA-LNCC’s Participation in BRACIS & SBBD 2025
Oct, 09 2025

Researchers and students from the National Laboratory for Scientific Computing (LNCC/MCTI) took part in BRACIS & SBBD 2025, one of Latin America’s leading scientific events in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Databases. The conference, held in Fortaleza (CE), brought together representatives from academia, industry, and government to discuss advances and challenges in data science.
LNCC researcher and coordinator of the Institute of Artificial Intelligence (IIA-LNCC), Fabio Porto, was one of the event’s highlights. Honored as the SBBD 2025 Distinguished Professor, he delivered the invited talk “Data Management Systems in the Age of Machine Learning”, which explored the convergence of database technologies and machine learning techniques.
According to Fabio, SBBD plays a strategic role in the evolution of data science in Brazil. “SBBD is the largest data science event in Latin America. It originated in the field of databases but has evolved over time, adapting to new technologies and emerging challenges in the area. In particular, we are now at the intersection of AI and machine learning, discussing the impact and development of robust and adaptable systems for these new conditions, where we deal not only with data but also with models,” he explained.
He also emphasized the event’s relevance for LNCC and for strengthening national research. “From LNCC’s perspective, participation in the SBBD conference is very important, as data management is directly tied to national sovereignty, scientific and technological knowledge, and the country’s wealth. [...] It connects technological and scientific sovereignty—developing national technology—with economic sovereignty, by creating national products that can be applied both in industry and academia,” he added.
IIA-LNCC researcher and LNCC PhD candidate Gabriela Moraes also participated, presenting the talk “Gypscie-KG: Building a Logic-Based Approach for Knowledge Graph Data Integration View in ML Systems” during the LAGO Workshop — LLMs, Graph Analysis, and Ontologies. Gabriela highlighted the event’s collaborative nature: “I received valuable feedback on the progress of my research and had the chance to attend talks by other researchers working in the same field,” she said.
The LNCC Institute of Artificial Intelligence also supported the participation of Júlia Neumann (Master’s student) and Samuel Torres (PhD candidate), both from the DEXL Laboratory. Júlia presented “Twinscie-Prov: Managing Provenance over the ML Lifecycle in the Twinscie System”, while Samuel presented “Subdomain Identification Strategies for Efficient Machine Learning Models.”
For Samuel, the event was a valuable opportunity for exchange and learning. “I’m grateful for the support from the Institute of AI, as it allowed me to be here sharing ideas and experiences with other researchers and using these moments to enrich our work,” he said.
Júlia also emphasized the importance of the experience. “It was a great and enriching experience, as I was able to present my research on data provenance while also learning from other colleagues working on similar topics,” she noted.
The participation of LNCC in BRACIS & SBBD 2025 reinforces the institution’s role in bridging scientific research and technological development, consolidating its position at the forefront of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science in Brazil.
